Volunteers are at the heart of The Hackney Pirates. They work one-to-one with young people who are both falling behind at school and face disadvantages in their personal circumstances. This extra adult attention has a transformative impact on their literacy, confidence and perseverance, so that they can achieve both at school and in the world beyond.
Our team of 350 volunteers have given over 8,000 hours of their time in the last year to support the Young Pirates with their reading and with their writing towards professionally published products such as books and websites. This support has meant that, on average, the young people who have attended our weekly sessions for a year, have increased their reading ages 52% faster than age-related expectations.
Over this last year, as well as supporting the learning of the Young Pirates, the team has been actively recruiting and has grown from 200 to 350 regular volunteers. They have further supported The Hackney Pirates through fundraising initiatives, pro bono support and spreading awareness through the local community.
