Safe Homes for Women

The Preston Road Women's Centre

Between 2012 and 2015, Winner the Preston Road Women's Centre in conjunction with its Trading Arm, Winner Trading Ltd, sourced grant and loan investment to acquire and refurbish 56 Empty Homes to house women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse. Working with a consortium of agencies and supported by Kingston Upon Hull City Council, we found 56 local properties in need of significant refurbishment to bring them up to Decent Homes Standard so they could be let to vulnerable families in crisis.
We were awarded £1 million in three tranches of grants from the Department of Communities and Local Government and we matched this with £980 000 of loan from Unity Trust Bank in order to purchase, lease and refurbish the properties we found. This significant level of loan investment enabled us to maximise the number of properties we could acquire and deliver safe, affordable housing to the women using our services at the women's centre. It also contributed significantly to the financial sustainability of the organisation and by extension its services to local women and children.
