All About Trans

On Road Media

All About Trans has transformed the visibility and portrayal of transgender people in the UK media. Its work with the trans community and the media since 2011 resulted in great outcomes in 2016 including the first trans character in EastEnders, played by a trans actor, and the second series of trans-themed sitcom Boy Meets Girl. Both were direct results of this project.
It achieved this by simply bringing transgender and gender variant people together with senior media professionals in friendly meet-ups – maybe a coffee or an informal meeting at their offices. The result has been a transformation in the way trans people are portrayed in print, radio and TV. A senior features writer from the Mail on Sunday explained: “Trans people are people before they are anything else, and it's only by getting to know them we make their experience unremarkable and mainstream.”
Run by the three staff of On Road Media, and a trans-led Advisory Group, All About Trans has had huge impact, leading to over 550 positive media portrayals of trans people and leveraging £.5.5M in programming. It has increased the confidence of a community vulnerable to discrimination, creating a legacy of trans people engaging confidently with the media on their own terms.
