Upwards of 200,000 children in the UK are affected by a parent in prison each year. Spurgeons’ Invisible Walls Family Support Service at HMP/YOI Winchester aims to improve the lives of children and families affected; helping to reduce the risk of reoffending and intergenerational offending, through strengthened family relationships.
As well as running the prison’s visitor’s centre, we support family visits; deliver parenting programmes; run family days and provide a homework club for children and their Dads.
Our team of 80 volunteers make a real impact on the lives of children and families affected by imprisonment. They are instrumental in helping us deliver our work at the prison, and with proper training, work alongside our staff team to help:
-Engage, support and signpost families during visits
-Provide play opportunities, to improve the experience of children visiting a loved one inside
-Deliver a range of parenting support and interventions for fathers in custody
