Sonya began volunteering for Sabre Trust as an education advisor 6 years ago. The Sabre Trust helps to improve the quality of kindergarten education in Ghana through the Transformational Teacher Training Programme. Over the last 12 months Sonya has spent 9 weeks in Ghana, and in the UK spends at least 3 days a week supporting the team remotely. Sonya’s time in Ghana is dedicated to training the team of local trainers and Sabre’s project team to deliver and manage the teacher training course. Back in the UK she works tirelessly writing the training course content and trainer scripts.
The impact of her hard work in Ghana is incredible. So far 720 student teachers, teachers and head teachers have received high quality teacher training, enabling 23,120 children to have a quality start to their education.
The most amazing thing about Sonya is that she does all of this at 81, proving that age is most definitely no barrier. Working and living conditions in Ghana are very basic, often there is no electricity or running water, even this will not stop her. Sonya is a crucial part of our team, we would not be where we are today without her.
