Martin Hywood

Muscular Dystrophy UK

Martin Hywood, 43, has been living with muscular dystrophy for 20 years, it means he can’t go more than a few steps without pain. His life is devoted to helping and inspiring others to live well with the condition.
He’s an inspiration to others, Martin is determined to show that although muscular dystrophy can be scary and difficult, but with the right support you can achieve your dreams. His ‘can do’ approach means he is a role model for youngsters living with the condition and he is always there for others either on the phone or on social media offering support and encouragement.

Awareness of muscular dystrophy is low, most people have never heard of the condition. So Martin set about his own awareness campaign to raise awareness of muscular dystrophy and Muscular Dystrophy UK through a range of physically demanding fundraising activities that pushed him to the limit . A lifelong Leeds United fan Martin secured support from the club and using the #MusclesMatter hashtag and produced a video, supported by celebrities, that was shown at games together with opportunities to donate through bucket collections.
