Leap Confronting Conflict

Leap Confronting Conflict has 30+ years’ experience providing conflict management training and support to young people and the professionals working with them.

In 2016 we launched our pioneering Leadership and Enterprise (L&E) programme, working with young people at risk of gang involvement and offending in Lambeth and Southwark.

We know that being part of a gang has huge benefits for young people – a sense of belonging, support and safety. In contrast to gang exit programmes, L&E takes a ‘whole group’ approach, working with existing groups to ensure that the benefits are not lost, whilst bringing about long-term behavioural change.

One of the challenges was reaching the groups in the first place. We built strong partnerships with organisations who had existing relationships with young people, and trained their youth workers to make sure the programme is sustainable. We also added in incentives, such as trips, to engage young people.

As a result, in the past year 94 young people took part in workshops and 45 young people completed the programme.

Young people reported changed attitudes towards carrying knives, led each other towards more positive choices and gained the skills and confidence to positively manage the conflict in their lives.
