Schoolreaders is a children's literacy charity which recruits volunteers to go into local state primary schools and listen to the children read each week. Currently we have 1,270 volunteers listening to children read in 674 schools around the country. The time the volunteers spend with the children helps improve their literacy but also results in; improved self-esteem and confidence; developing relationships and social skills; and positive role models.
When Coronavirus shut schools for most pupils, Schoolreaders volunteer Kathy Thompson started videoing herself every day reading her favourite stories to help the children at the school she volunteers at access reading when they were at home. We expanded this idea, and now Kathy's videos are shared weekly as part of our Schoolreaders Storytime initiative with all 1534 Schoolreaders partner schools.
