Beanstalk is a national children’s literacy charity whose goal is for every child to leave school able to read well so that they can thrive in life.

We recruit, train and support volunteers to provide one-to-one help to children struggling with their reading. Last year we supported 11,000 children through 3,000 volunteers.

Our 2020 Vision sets out a new five-year strategy to transform Beanstalk and extend our reach to support 30,000 children a year by 2020-21. As part of this journey, last year:

1. We diversified our programmes so that we can support a wider range of children aged 3 to 13. We launched Story Starters, a new collaborative early years’ programme, and merged with Reading Matters to allow us to start working in secondary schools.
2. We started working with our Story Starters partner LuCiD on a Randomised Control Trial to build up high-quality evidence to demonstrate the impact of our work.
3. We implemented a new CRM system to make us more efficient by transforming how we manage our relationships with volunteers and schools.
4. We had our most successful fundraising year ever, setting us up to grow and have a lasting impact on more children.
