Auditory Verbal UK

Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) is transforming the lives of deaf children across the UK. Its innovative programme is enabling deaf children to get an equal start at school and have the same opportunities in life as their hearing peers.

Far too many deaf children in the UK are underachieving at school, at risk of bullying, suffer poor mental health and have lower employment prospects. The impact of this disadvantage is lifelong.

But this does not have to be the case. AVUK’s early intervention programme is bucking a national trend of underachievement. 80% of children who spend at least two years on the AVUK programme achieve spoken language equivalent to their hearing peers, and most attend mainstream schools (Hogan 2016). They are equipped, not just with the listening and talking skills, but the social skills and confidence to succeed.

AVUK has the ambition, evidence base and strategy to transform services and outcomes for deaf children in the UK. In the last 12 months, we have published a compelling cost benefit analysis; a 10 year audit of outcomes; supported over 140 families; doubled the number of internationally accredited training courses available and received awards for excellence and educational achievement.
