In 2016, recognising their shared commitment to protecting children in war, leading law firm Clifford Chance LLP and Save the Children harnessed the power of their strategic partnership to help procure, equip, and launch a Search and Rescue Vessel to help save the lives of those fleeing conflict, poverty, and persecution across the Mediterranean Sea.
Clifford Chance supported Save the Children to overcome the legal, practical, and operational challenges associated with this ambitious, lifesaving project. Pro-bono support was led by Clifford Chance Partner Alex Panayides, who, as a child, was himself forced to flee conflict in an overcrowded boat across the Mediterranean. Since launching the Vos Hestia, Save the Children’s search and rescue vessel, has saved over 2,700 people, including over 400 children. This activity was part of the 57,377 hours of pro-bono legal advice Clifford Chance provided charities in 2015/16.
In addition, the Clifford Chance Foundation regularly supports Save the Children’s emergency appeals, donating over £275,000 to protect children in the toughest circumstances. Along the entire route of travel and in forgotten corners of the world, this partnership is helping children in war to survive, learn, and be protected.
