One Good Thing - The Connection's Pop Up Shop

The Connection at St Martin's

The Connection at St Martin’s has realised a new income stream through donated goods in 2015/16

The Volunteer Manager felt that this was an underutilised resource and set about improving both the quality and quantity of donations received, and undertook selling unneeded items.

Firstly he set up a relationship with Kensington & Chelsea Council where they provided free access to Portobello Market where items could be sold directly to the public – whilst at the same time promoting the charity’s work.

After the success of this he arranged a relationship with local business partners – most notably John Lewis Oxford Street, Crown Estates, Regent Street Management Direct and Shaftesbury – who provided a rent free pop up shop in Westminster for the last 2 years.

The shop was called “One Good Thing” and garnered significant press and online publicity.

This initiative greatly increased The Connection’s profile, increased awareness of the charity’s work with Westminster’s, raised thousands of pounds, engaged with local residents, businesses and volunteers who donated time and goods – and most importantly – gave valuable retail experience to clients through The Connection’s in house volunteer program Step Up – leading to increased confidence and employability prospects for this client group.
