Defend Second Transplants

Anthony Nolan

When NHS England declared that there was not enough money to pay for potentially lifesaving stem cell transplants for blood cancer patients whose disease had returned, Anthony Nolan responded with a successful campaign to ensure that funding would not be denied. The ‘Defend Second Transplants’ campaign empowered patients and families to share their stories, provided a platform for the clinical community to challenge the decision and mobilised support from MPs across the political spectrum. After seven months of campaigning, NHS England announced in February 2017 that second transplants would be funded with immediate effect.
